Hi Bronwyn,
Canada's Food Guide can be a useful tool for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike to help ensure vitamins and mineral needs are met. Some of the key nutrients a vegetarian many want to pay special attention to are protein, iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D and Omega 3s. All of these can be found in supplement form but they are also available in a variety of foods suitable for a vegetarian. Iron is found in fortified cereals, dried fruit, leafy green vegetables and eggs. Vitamin B12 is found in fortified cereals, eggs, cheese, milk, yogurt and fortified soy products. Vitamin D is found in milk, cheese, yogurt and fortified soy milk. Omega 3 fatty acids are found in flaxseed, wlanuts, soybeans, flaxseed oil, canola oil. Meat alternatives are actually the topic of my next blog so I will discuss a number of vegetarian sources of protein then.
Thanks,
Jeffrey

Hi Ashley. It is great to hear you have such an interest in nutrition. Certainly a degree in nutrition or dietetics would nicely compliment your commerce degree in order to pursue a career in nutrition. If you are unable to go back to school there may be opportunities in the food industry. Some food companies are working on initiatives for healthier foods and programs which often involve teams including both business people and dietitians. There is also the foodservice industry where some companies are looking at providing nutritious meals to their customers. Hopefully this provides you with a few ideas on related fields you may be interested in. Jeffrey

Hi Professor Lalonde!
I am currently a student at Queen's in my fourth year of undergrad and have taken your HLTH230 class, and am currently in HLTH331 (advanced nutrition). While I am a Commerce (B.Com) student, I have developed a deep deep passion for nutrition. I find myself genuinely getting excited to go to class or to read books on nutrition or to just talk with others about the subject. If I had had this strong passion for nutrition before coming to university, I would have opted to go into a Life Sciences or Nutrition program; however, unfortunately I didn't develop my passion until about halfway through the Commerce program. I'm wondering if you have any suggestions or ideas of how one might get involved in nutrition without becoming an RD. I've looked into that it and it would involve me going back to high school to get my chemistry and then doing undergrad all over again, etc. Do you know of any other ways I could get involved in nutrition? Thank you so much for your time and expertise. I would love to meet with you if at all possible; however, I understand time is a constraint and so email works perfectly fine as well!

Thank you so much!,
Ashley Pearson

Thank you for your encouragement and interest in the blog. I will be reviewing healthy eating and offering helpful tips and suggestions. I am not able to address one person's specific health problems, as these should really be addressed by one's own healthcare professional who can complete a thorough assessment and offer appropriate personalized medical advice. Hopefully you will still be able to benefit from some of the topics covered. Thanks, Jeffrey

This all sounds good, nice to know there are people out there that care about what they fill up on, even if we don't always have the time to prepare homecooked foods. It seems to me that time is the major factor in my daily regime. I always strive to have healthy food but for some reason those cravings for sweet food usually arise in the evening and the savoury food on arriving home from a full day's work. It's hard to resist the odd packet of crisps at times like this.

I'm very excited about this blog and really hope to figure out how to eat healthy. Most of the online information suggest what kinds of food to include in our diet everyday, but I was wondering if the time of food consumption is also a factor? Also will you be addressing people with digestion problems or other situations as well?
